Why a partner

Why Indian accounting needs more than a software login

India has one of the most detailed indirect-tax systems in the world: GST across states, e-invoicing, e-way bills, TDS and TCS, a financial year that runs April to March, and audit rules that keep tightening. Zoho Books is built for all of it, but the software only helps if it is configured for how your business actually trades.

Several states, several GSTINs

Businesses registered in more than one state must handle place of supply, inter-state IGST and branch-wise reporting correctly, or every return starts with a reconciliation.

E-invoicing and e-way bills

Once your turnover crosses the threshold, every B2B invoice needs an IRN from the government portal, and goods movement needs e-way bills. Both should happen inside normal invoicing.

TDS, TCS and credit matching

Deducting tax at payment and matching purchase credit against what suppliers filed are where books and returns drift apart most often.

Auditors asking about audit trail

Companies using accounting software are expected to have an edit log that cannot be switched off, and auditors now check it as part of their report.

What a Zoho Books partner changes

A Zoho Books partner is an independent company, separate from Zoho Corporation, that sets up and supports the software around your business. We start with your GST registrations, your branches, how you invoice, who approves payments and what your accountant needs each month. Then we build Zoho Books around those answers and document why each choice was made.

For a single-GSTIN business, that saves weeks of trial and error. For a business with several states, an export line or a Tally history to bring across, it is the difference between a system your team trusts and one they quietly work around.

India compliance

What India compliance looks like inside Zoho Books

Here is the list we work through on every Indian project: what the rule is, and how we set Zoho Books up to handle it.

RequirementWhat it meansHow Zoho Books and we handle it
GST and multiple GSTINsRegistration in each state, the correct CGST, SGST or IGST by place of supply, and HSN and SAC codes on every item.GSTIN, state and place of supply configured per organisation, HSN and SAC set on items, and multi-GSTIN structure planned before any data goes in.
E-invoicingMandatory once aggregate annual turnover exceeded Rs 5 crore in any year since 2017-18, counted across all GSTINs under one PAN. Once it applies, it stays. We help you confirm applicability with your accountant, connect the Invoice Registration Portal, and test IRN and QR code generation before go-live.
Invoice reporting windowLarger taxpayers, at Rs 10 crore turnover and above, are expected to report invoices to the portal within 30 days. Your accountant confirms the current rule.A month-end routine and checks that catch invoices not yet reported, so nothing is discovered late.
E-way billsMovement of goods above the notified value needs an e-way bill with transporter details.E-way bills generated from the invoice, with transporter and vehicle details captured at dispatch.
GST returns and credit matchingGSTR-1 and GSTR-3B data, and matching your purchases against GSTR-2B for input tax credit.Return data prepared from the ledger, a 2B matching routine, and a mismatch list your accountant clears before filing.
TDS and TCSTax deducted on payments such as contractors, professionals and rent, and tax collected on certain sales.Sections and rates configured as tax settings, vendor PAN captured, deduction applied at entry, and reports ready for returns.
Audit trailCompanies using accounting software must use software with an edit log that cannot be disabled, for years starting on or after 1 April 2023. Other entity types are treated differently, so your CA confirms.User roles and approvals configured, and the change history walked through with your auditor to confirm it meets their needs.
Financial yearAn April to March year, quarterly and monthly return cycles, and year-end closing.Financial year set correctly, and opening balances and cut-over aligned to a month, quarter or year start.

Rules change, so we confirm rather than assume. This table describes the position at the time of writing. At kickoff we check the current thresholds, rates and deadlines with you and your accountant, and we do not hard-code rates or limits without confirming them first.

Comparison

Zoho Books vs Tally, Busy, Vyapar and QuickBooks

Most Indian buyers arrive with Tally on their desk. Here is an honest comparison. We are a Zoho partner, so we favour Zoho Books, but we say where another tool genuinely fits better, because a wrong-fit purchase helps nobody.

ProductWhere it is strongWhere Zoho Books is strongerWhere it may fit better
Tally PrimeThe default for Indian accountants, fast keyboard-driven entry, deep familiarity and a huge base of trained users.Cloud access from anywhere, multi-branch collaboration, live dashboards, CRM and inventory integration, and easier remote access for auditors.A single-office business whose accountant works only in Tally.
BusyPopular with trading and distribution businesses, with strong desktop inventory handling.Cloud access, native integrations, workflow automation and approvals.Inventory-heavy traders who are comfortable with desktop software.
VyaparSimple, mobile-first billing for small shops and micro businesses.Full accounting depth, GST return data, e-invoicing, multi-user roles and integrations.Very small retailers who need billing more than accounting.
QuickBooksSeen mainly in older setups, and in international groups that already use it.An India edition built around GST, e-invoicing and e-way bills.Usually not a fit for a new Indian setup; migration to an India-edition product is the common path.

You do not have to choose overnight

Many businesses run Tally and Zoho Books side by side for a period, and that is a sensible way to move. We plan the switch so your accountant can compare both sets of numbers for a closing cycle before Tally is retired.

Plan prices, user limits and free-plan terms change and differ by edition, so we do not print them here. Check the current Zoho Books India plan page, and we will help you choose the right plan on a scoping call.

Tally migration

Tally to Zoho Books migration, without losing history

Moving from Tally is the most common project we run in India. The data is the easy part. Keeping your reports consistent with last year's is the real work, so we treat migration as an accounting exercise first and a technical one second.

What we migrate

  • Ledger groups, ledgers, customers and vendors, with their balances
  • Stock items, units and opening stock
  • Opening balances as of your cut-over date
  • Open sales and purchase invoices and credit notes
  • History for the period you choose, commonly the current year plus the previous one
  • GSTINs, tax registrations and bank details

How the migration runs

Step 1

Export and review

We take a Tally export, review it for duplicates, inactive ledgers and unmapped groups, and agree what should come across.

Step 2

Map your structure

Tally groups and ledgers are mapped to a clean Zoho Books chart of accounts, so reports stay comparable with previous years.

Step 3

Rebuild tax natively

GST and TDS are rebuilt as native Zoho Books settings instead of being copied over as ledgers, so returns and reports work properly.

Step 4

Import and reconcile

Masters and vouchers are imported in batches, then reconciled against your Tally trial balance until the totals match.

Step 5

Parallel close and cut over

Both systems run for one closing cycle so your accountant can sign off, then Tally moves to read-only.

The best time to switch. Cut over at the start of a month, a quarter or the financial year, and avoid the days around a return deadline. A clean start date makes reconciliation easy, and we plan the timeline backwards from it.

Cities

Zoho Books partner in your city

We work with clients across India, remotely by default. Pick the page for your city to see the industries, scenarios and support that matter most locally.

Zoho Books partner in Chennai

Chennai is our home city and Zoho's, so meeting in person is easy. We work with manufacturing and engineering SMEs, trading firms and service companies moving off Tally, with local GST know-how, the same time zone, and one team from scoping through to month-end support.

Zoho Books partner in Bengaluru

Bengaluru's startups, SaaS companies and services exporters need investor-ready books and often several entities. We set up export invoicing in foreign currency, multi-entity structures for groups with a parent abroad, and MIS dashboards that founders and finance leads can read without a spreadsheet.

Zoho Books partner in Mumbai

Mumbai runs on trading, distribution and financial services, with high invoice volumes and registrations in more than one state. We build multi-GSTIN structures, branch-wise reporting and clean input tax credit matching, so month-end never depends on one accountant's spreadsheet and Tally teams keep their history.

Zoho Books partner in Delhi NCR

Delhi, Gurugram, Noida and Ghaziabad businesses sell across state lines every day. We set up correct inter-state IGST flows, e-invoicing and e-way bills for distribution and e-commerce, and project billing for contractors, all connected to Zoho CRM so sales and accounts share one customer record.

Zoho Books partner in Hyderabad

Hyderabad's pharma, life sciences and IT services firms need audit-ready records and export invoicing. We pair Zoho Books with Zoho Inventory for batch and stock tracking, set up foreign-currency invoices for exports, and configure roles and approvals so auditors can follow every change without asking for exports.

Zoho Books partner in Kerala

Kerala businesses in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode include jewellery and textile retailers, spice and seafood exporters, hospitality groups and NRI-owned companies with Gulf links. We connect Indian GST books with UAE entities where needed, set up export documentation, and keep every branch reporting into one view.

We also support clients in other Indian cities remotely. If yours is not listed, book a call and we will set it up the same way.

Industries

Industries we set up Zoho Books for in India

Each sector invoices, tracks cost and reports profit differently. We configure Zoho Books around how yours actually works.

Manufacturing

Raw material and finished goods, bills of materials where needed, vendor payments and cost-of-goods reports that finance can rely on.

Trading and distribution

Multi-warehouse stock, purchase orders, credit limits and customer-wise ageing, with GST-correct sales and purchase flows.

E-commerce and retail

Orders from your store and marketplaces posted as sales, with returns, gateway fees and payouts reconciled correctly.

IT and SaaS exporters

Export invoices in foreign currency, subscription billing, GST treatment for exports and receipts reconciled against bank credits.

Healthcare and wellness

Package and patient billing, consumable spend, branch-wise reports and a clear split of taxable and exempt services.

Education and training

Fee schedules, instalments, refunds and multi-branch accounts, with reminders that reduce late payments.

Jewellery and retail

High-value stock, multi-store reporting, vendor payables and daily cash and bank reconciliation across showrooms.

Real estate and construction

Progress billing, retention, subcontractor payments and project costing across sites and entities.

Do not see your industry? Book a call. Zoho Books is flexible enough that most sectors are a matter of configuration, not compromise.

Selling abroad

Selling abroad, or reporting to a foreign parent?

Many Indian businesses invoice customers overseas, and many international groups run an Indian entity. Both need Zoho Books set up on the Indian edition for local compliance, with a plan for currencies, intercompany billing and group reporting.

Our main Zoho Books partner overview explains how country editions work for groups with entities in several countries.

What we set up

  • Export invoicing. Invoices in foreign currency with the right GST treatment for exports, for example under a Letter of Undertaking where it applies to you.
  • Foreign-currency receipts. Payments from overseas customers reconciled against bank credits, with exchange gains and losses booked to the right accounts.
  • Indian arm of a foreign group. Local GST and statutory books in India, with reporting that rolls up to the parent in the format it expects.
  • Intercompany invoices. Clear rules for services billed between an Indian entity and its overseas sister companies, so GST and foreign tax treatment do not get tangled.

When you need something custom

If a standard connector does not fit, we build the link with Deluge, Zoho Flow, Zoho Creator and the Zoho APIs, then document and hand it over so it never depends on one developer's memory. Already on Zoho One or planning to be? Design the Books setup with your CRM and inventory in mind from day one.

Process

Our Zoho Books implementation process

Every engagement follows the same seven steps, so you always know where you are, what happens next and what we need from you.

  1. Discovery call

We learn your GSTINs, branches, current tools, team and pain points, and send a short written summary so mistakes are caught on day one.

  2. Scope and plan

We recommend the structure, plan and integrations, then agree scope, timeline and price in writing before any work starts.

  3. Foundation setup

Organisation, GST and TDS configuration, chart of accounts, users, roles, templates and numbering, built for your registrations.

  4. Data migration

Masters, opening balances, open bills and agreed history, cleaned before import and reconciled to your trial balance afterwards.

  5. Integrations and automation

Banks, gateways, CRM, inventory, payroll and workflows connected and tested with realistic transactions.

  6. Training and parallel run

Role-based training and, for migrations, a parallel closing cycle so your accountant can compare old and new numbers.

  7. Go-live and support

A cut-over plan aligned to a month, quarter or year start, hyper-care in the first weeks, and a handover with documentation.

How long does it take?

Timelines depend on scope, so treat these as typical ranges. We confirm a firm timeline after a scoping call.

ScopeTypical duration
Single GSTIN, standard setup, no migration2 to 4 weeks
Single GSTIN with Tally or spreadsheet migration4 to 8 weeks
Several GSTINs or branches6 to 10 weeks
Integrations with CRM, inventory, payroll or e-commerceAdds 1 to 4 weeks, depending on how many
Multi-entity or multi-country rollout8 to 12 weeks or more, often phased by entity

The more responsive your team is in the first two weeks, the faster everything else moves. We ask for one decision-maker, access to your current data, your registration details and a few short review sessions.

Cost

What a Zoho Books partner costs in India

Every project is different, so we quote after a scoping call instead of publishing a price that fits nobody. Here is what moves the number.

Registrations and entities

The number of GSTINs, branches and legal entities is the biggest driver, because each needs its own setup and testing.

Data to migrate

A clean current-year import is small. Several years of Tally history with messy masters takes longer.

Integrations

Each connection to CRM, inventory, payroll, gateways or an online store adds design, build and testing time.

Customisation and training

Custom reports, automations and the number of people we train all change the effort.

Engagement models

ModelHow it worksBest when
Fixed scopeAgreed deliverables for an agreed price, often after a short paid discovery.Requirements are clear and stable.
Collaborative sprintsWork delivered in short cycles with regular reviews, priced by estimate or capped hours.Requirements will evolve as you see the system.
Retainer or hours bucketA monthly block of support and improvement hours. You want ongoing help after go-live.

A single-GSTIN setup with light migration is a small project. A multi-state rollout with several integrations is larger. Either way you get scope, assumptions and what triggers extra charges in writing before work begins.

Choosing a partner

How to choose a Zoho Books partner in India

A partner shapes how your finance team works for years, so the choice deserves more than a price comparison. This is the checklist we would use if we were buying.

Eight questions to ask before you sign

  1. Are you in Zoho's official partner directory? Check the listing yourself, filter by country and read the reviews.
  2. Have you set up GST, e-invoicing and TDS in Zoho Books? Ask for specifics, not just general Zoho experience.
  3. How do you handle a Tally migration? Listen for ledger mapping, trial balance checks, sign-off and a parallel run.
  4. Who does the work? Ask whether you get a named consultant or a rotating queue, and who covers absences.
  5. What will you document? You should get configuration notes and walkthroughs, not only a working system.
  6. How will we communicate? Ask about meeting cadence and response times. How fast a partner replies before you sign predicts how fast they reply after.
  7. Can you work with my accountant and auditor? The best setups are built with the people who file your returns.
  8. What does it cost, and what is not included? Ask for scope, assumptions and what triggers extra charges.

Red flags

  • A very low fixed price that promises everything, with no discovery step
  • Setup that starts before anyone asks about your GST registrations
  • No mention of e-invoicing, TDS or reconciliation
  • Slow or vague replies during the sales process
  • No documentation or handover in the scope

Partner tiers: useful, not the whole story

Zoho groups partners into tiers (Authorized, Advanced and Premium) based on factors such as certifications, tenure, customers and verified reviews. Tier is a helpful signal but not a quality score. A smaller partner that has set up Zoho Books for Indian businesses many times can serve you better than a larger one that has not. Focus on relevant experience, communication and references.

Why Datahikes

Why Indian businesses choose Datahikes for Zoho Books

Datahikes is a Zoho Consulting Partner headquartered in Perungudi, Chennai. Our background spans finance operations, data analytics, project management and digital systems, so we treat Zoho Books as a business process to design, not a form to fill in.

India-first setup

We configure GST, e-invoicing and TDS for your registrations before anything else, so your first return matches what your accountant expects.

The whole Zoho stack

We also implement Zoho CRM, Desk, Creator, Inventory, People and Zoho One, so Books is designed alongside the rest, not patched on later.

Custom build capability

When a standard connector does not fit, we write the function. Deluge, Zoho Flow, Zoho Creator and API work are part of every week.

Documented, not mysterious

You receive configuration notes and walkthroughs, so you understand why things were built as they were and can extend them.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Zoho Books in India

Straight answers on GST, e-invoicing, Tally migration, timelines and cost. Still have a question? Send it through the form below.

What does a Zoho Books partner in India do?

A Zoho Books partner is an independent company that sets up, migrates, integrates, customises and supports Zoho Books. In India that means configuring GST, e-invoicing, e-way bills and TDS for your business, moving data from Tally, and supporting your team after go-live.

Is Zoho Books GST compliant?

Yes. The India edition is built around GST, with CGST, SGST and IGST logic, HSN and SAC codes, place of supply and GST reports including GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B data. Compliance still depends on correct setup and your accountant's review, which is what we configure and hand over.

Does Zoho Books support e-invoicing and e-way bills?

Yes. The India edition supports e-invoicing through the Invoice Registration Portal and e-way bill generation. We connect the portal, run test invoices and set up the routine, so IRNs and e-way bills are produced as part of normal invoicing rather than as a separate task.

Who must use e-invoicing in India?

E-invoicing applies to GST-registered businesses whose aggregate annual turnover exceeded Rs 5 crore in any financial year since 2017-18, counted across all GSTINs under one PAN. Once it applies, it continues to apply. Confirm your position with your accountant, because thresholds can change.

Can I file GST returns directly from Zoho Books?

Zoho Books prepares GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B data from your ledger and supports matching against GSTR-2B. Filing still needs a human review of mismatches and supplier non-filing. We set up the route you use, whether that is your accountant or your own team.

How does Zoho Books handle TDS and TCS?

TDS and TCS are set up as tax configuration, with the sections and rates that apply to your business, vendor PAN details and deduction applied when you record a payment. We confirm sections and rates with your accountant, because they change over time.

Does Zoho Books have an audit trail for the Companies Act?

Companies using accounting software are expected to use software with an edit log that cannot be disabled, for years starting on or after 1 April 2023. We configure roles and approvals and walk your auditor through the change history so they can confirm it meets their needs.

Can I migrate from Tally to Zoho Books without losing history?

Yes. We map your Tally groups and ledgers to a clean chart of accounts, import masters, opening balances, open bills and the history you choose, and reconcile the result to your Tally trial balance. A parallel closing period lets your accountant sign off before you switch.

Can I keep using Tally alongside Zoho Books?

Yes, for a period. Many businesses run both for one or two closing cycles so the numbers can be compared, then move Tally to read-only. We plan the overlap so it is short, deliberate and ends on a clear cut-over date.

How long does a Zoho Books setup take in India?

A standard single-GSTIN setup often takes two to four weeks. Tally migration usually brings it to four to eight weeks, and multi-GSTIN or multi-entity rollouts take longer. We confirm a timeline after a short scoping call.

When is the best time to switch accounting software in India?

The cleanest moment is the start of a month, a quarter or the financial year, away from return deadlines. A clean start date makes opening balances and reconciliation simple, and we plan the project timeline backwards from it.

Can Zoho Books handle several GSTINs and branches?

Yes. Businesses registered in several states can be structured with one GSTIN per registration and branch-wise reporting, so inter-state and intra-state supplies get the right tax. We plan the structure before data goes in, because it is hard to change later.

Does Zoho Books work for export invoices and foreign currency?

Yes. Zoho Books supports invoices and receipts in foreign currency, with exchange gains and losses booked to the right accounts. We set up the GST treatment for exports with your accountant, and reconcile overseas receipts against your bank credits.

Which payment gateways and banks work with Zoho Books in India?

Zoho Books works with common Indian gateways such as Razorpay, PayU and Cashfree, UPI-linked collection, and bank feeds from many Indian banks. Availability varies by bank and by plan, so we check the ones you use before we plan the setup.

Do you support businesses outside Chennai?

Yes. We work remotely with clients across India, including Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Kerala. For larger projects we can discuss in-person sessions on the scoping call, and we schedule work around your team's hours.

What does a Zoho Books partner cost in India?

Cost depends on the number of GSTINs and entities, migration volume, integrations, customisation and training. A single-GSTIN setup with light migration is a small project. We quote after a scoping call, with clear scope and assumptions, and no surprise charges.
